About this Trip

World Class Waves in El Salvador

The ultimate waves in El Salvador are Las Flores and Punta Mango in the east and Punta Roca in the west. In the east, five minutes west by car from the fishing village of El Cuco, you will find Playa Las Flores, the gorgeous sandy beach with a very long, consistent right point break. Punta Mango is 15 minutes west of Las Flores, only accessible by boat or a 4WD vehicle; and don’t get your hopes up, there are no mangoes in sight—it was named this because of the nearby beach called Playa Mango.

Las Flores

The best time of year for surfing Las Flores with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is during Winter – from May to October. Very consistent right point break. It is a sand point directly in front of the hotel that breaks mechanically with a hollow takeoff at low tide (softer at high tide) and very long rides up to 300m – it has been compared to Jeffrey’s Bay and Bells. On small to moderate swells (3-5 ft faces), or fuller tides, Las Flores is a classic sand point break, super fun on a shortboard, fish, or longboard, with long open faces and wackable wall sections comparable to a good day at Rincon or Noosa. The break can shut down almost entirely at high tide if there is not much swell, but on the biggest of swells the high tide is more manageable.

El Sunzal & El Tunco

It’s a fairly long wave, a small, right-facing Chicama. Accessing the peak is quite easy, as a waveless channel forms next to the break. Playa El Tunco owes its name to a large, partially submerged black rock resembling an upside-down pig. The rocks cover the beach, shifting with the tides. During the dry season, the sand creates a beautiful black sand beach.

Itinerary

One day on our trip:

In the morning –

We wake with first light, load the van, and scout the peaks to pick the best spot for the tide. We pack snacks for the road. You paddle out with a coach in the water and a local guide while we film every wave. Back at the lodge, we grab lunch, review the clips, circle two fixes, run a couple of land drills, then decide: second surf or one of the extra activities.

In the afternoon –

If the wind stays kind, we go for an optional second session; if it blows out, we rest or pick an extra activity: waterfall, viewpoint hike, beach nap. Afternoon surfs are walk-to-only; no van, filming, or in-water coaching included.

Evening –

Sunset beach walks, stretching & cold coconuts/cerveja . We lock the plan for tomorrow and head out for a simple, local dinner with the crew.

Accommodation Details

We use two bases and travel to Las Flores when the point turns on.
Both stays are in 3-person rooms, steps from the beach, with Wi-Fi, AC and private bathrooms. Breakfast isn’t included

El Tunco — Vaquero Surf Lodge

Comfortable, walk-to-the-beach setup with a pool and a fully equipped common kitchen. You can cook breakfast/lunch in-house or head out to the great cafés nearby. Relaxed vibes and everything close—food, sunset strolls, and easy launch points for daily surfs. A solid home base to explore waves and local culture.

Las Flores — Vaquero Surf Lodge

Quieter and a bit more wild—ideal when the point is firing. You’re 2 minutes from Las Flores beach. There aren’t many eateries around, so we do a supermarket run by van and keep breakfasts simple; in the evening we dine out in town. Beachside coziness and the right vibes for early paddles and mellow nights.
