Trade Winter for Waves: A Pre-Carnival Surf Escape in Rio

Warning: This trip may result in an uncontrollable urge to dance samba, devour endless açai bowls, and book a one-way ticket to Rio. From gentle rollers to thrilling peaks, Rio's beaches have something for every surfer.

What to expect

Waves: Whether you're a total newbie or a seasoned shredder, Rio's got a wave with your name on it. We'll point you to the mellow spots for those first wobbly rides, and for the adrenaline junkies, we know just the beachbreaks where you can unleash your inner John John Florence (minus the world title, maybe).

Who's it for?

Ever wished you could teleport to a beach where the waves are pumping and the worries are nonexistent? Yeah, us too. That's why we created this trip. Come find your tribe of wave-chasers, conquer your fear of wipeouts (they happen to the best of us!), and discover why Cariocas have that permanent smile. P.S. We can't guarantee you'll find your soulmate on this trip, but we can guarantee epic sunsets and enough laughter to last a lifetime.

Beyond the Beach

Share stories and laughter with new friends over a delicious churrasco as the sun sets. Savor the taste of fresh açaí, topped with tropical fruits and granola. Go to a street bloco (party) where samba schools prepare for Carnival. Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Rio. Explore iconic landmarks, local cuisine, and feel the rhythm of samba pulsating through the streets. This trip is about more than just surfing – it's about experiencing the full spectrum of Brazilian culture.

There's no better time to experience it than in the weeks leading up to Carnival, when the city is buzzing with energy and the beaches are alive with rhythm. The background

Swell Adventures is the brainchild of Lucas, a Carioca surfer with a deep love for his hometown's breaks, and Suzanne, a globetrotting adventurer and surfer with a love for connecting and exploring cultures. We believe surfing is more than just a sport; it's a journey of self-discovery, connection, and pure stoke. And there's no better place to embark on that journey than in the vibrant heart of Rio de Janeiro, just before the city explodes with Carnival energy.

Why Rio?

Rio de Janeiro is our base. We have our surf school here. Besides, Rio is a surfer's paradise, offering a unique blend of fun waves, amazing views, and a vibrant culture. We will surf on the West Side of Rio, in the neighborhood of Recreio where you'll find perfect waves for your skill level. There are more hidden gems like wild beaches and secret surf spots in the surroundin area. And with February's warm water and smaller waves, it's the ideal time to experience Rio's magic before the Carnival crowds arrive.

Rio's water temperature is warm most of the year, that's why there are no wetsuit rentals. But, a few times per year East winds and current bring 18 degree water to the Carioca shores. We recommend you bring a 2mm wetsuit just in case.

Important Details

Getting around: Van rentals are not common in Rio, plus, they bring attention and it's hard to get around on more difficult paths. That's why we always opt to share Uber Rides: verified local drivers, cheap and flexible.

Airport Pickup will be done by our hired driver and he will know when and where to pick you up from.

Rio before & during Carnival can be chaotic with transit that takes hours, because of the street parties. That's why we opted for a pre-carnival trip, where you can still enjoy the street parties without all the tourists and the dangers. Yes - Carnival is all year round, there are always parties, especially right before Carnival.

Is Rio dangerous?

Like any major city, Rio de Janeiro has its challenges. However, we prioritize your safety and well-being throughout the trip. We'll stay in safe neighborhoods, provide guidance on navigating the city, and ensure you have a secure and enjoyable experience. Some rules you should follow: Don't wear precious jewelry, don't have your phone where thiefs can see it, don't walk at night on deserted streets.

If we go to any street party we strongly suggest you stay close to your peers, don't get lost, don't take any credit cards with you and hide your phone well.

How to Get to Rio's Waves

Your Brazilian surf adventure starts with a flight to Rio de Janeiro's Galeão International Airport (GIG). From major hubs around the world, you'll find plenty of connections to Cidade Maravilhosa.

Once you land, it's a quick and easy transfer to your beachfront accommodation, where the sound of the waves will be your soundtrack. We'll be ready to welcome you with open arms and chilled coconuts!

Important Visa & Travel Info:
  • Brazil: Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free. No need to stress about paperwork, just pack your stoke!

Getting Around:

  • Rio de Janeiro: Uber and 99 are the popular ride-hailing apps, making it easy to explore the city's beaches, nightlife, and cultural hotspots.

  • Surf Spots: We'll handle transportation to and from the best breaks each day, so you can focus on maximizing your wave count.

Pack Light, Travel Right:

  • Keep it simple! Rio's weather is warm year-round, so pack your favorite boardshorts, bikinis, and a few essentials. We recommend a carry-on and a backpack to keep things light and flexible.
