About this Trip

Join us for 14 unforgettable days exploring two of Indonesia’s most legendary surf destinations: North Sumatra and Lombok.

This isn’t your typical surf trip.

It’s an immersive progression experience designed for intermediate and advanced surfers who want to spend more time in the water, surf better waves, and improve faster than ever before.

Over two weeks, you’ll combine long surf sessions, personalized coaching, daily video analysis, surf-specific training, and world-class waves with the adventure of exploring two incredible Indonesian islands.

Every day is built around one goal: helping you become a more complete, more confident surfer.

Who It’s For

Whether you’re refining your turns, improving your positioning in the lineup, building confidence in bigger surf, or chasing your first proper barrel, this experience was designed for surfers ready to take the next step.

With daily coaching, 4K video analysis, surf-specific mobility sessions, and guidance from experienced local coaches, you’ll receive constant feedback and a clear progression plan throughout the trip.

This expedition is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers who want to accelerate their progression.

Why You’ll Love This Trip

Surf Some of Indonesia’s Best Waves

North Sumatra and Lombok are home to some of the most consistent and rewarding waves in the world. Long walls, crystal-clear water, warm tropical conditions, and far fewer crowds than Indonesia’s better-known destinations create the perfect environment to improve.

Built Around Progression

Every session has a purpose.

From dawn patrols and boat missions to video breakdowns and technical coaching, every day is structured to help you understand your surfing, make better decisions in the lineup, and unlock your next level.

Two Islands. Two Completely Different Experiences.

The mechanical right-handers of North Sumatra and the diverse reef breaks of Lombok complement each other perfectly, exposing you to different waves, different conditions, and different challenges that make you a more complete surfer.

More Water Time. Better Surfing.

Long sessions, strategic surf checks, personalized coaching, mobility work, recovery, and detailed video analysis mean you’ll leave Indonesia with noticeable improvements—not just unforgettable memories.

The Experience

Over 14 unforgettable days, we’ll explore two extraordinary surf regions while combining high-performance coaching, Indonesian island culture, and the adventure that defines every Swell Adventures expedition.

Itinerary

A Typical Day on the Expedition

Every day is built around one goal: helping you become a better surfer.

We start early with a surf check, analyzing the swell, tides and wind before choosing the best wave for the morning session. After a quick briefing and setting individual goals, it’s time to paddle out.

Back on land, we’ll refuel with breakfast, recover, and prepare for the second session. Before heading back into the water, we’ll work on surf-specific mobility, technique drills and movement preparation, helping you surf stronger and more efficiently.

Then it’s back out for another long session, putting into practice everything you’ve been working on throughout the day.

As the sun goes down, we’ll gather for dinner before one of the most valuable parts of the experience: our nightly 4K video analysis.

Together, we’ll break down every surfer’s waves, focusing on positioning, timing, wave selection, technique and decision-making. Every session is an opportunity to identify small adjustments that lead to big improvements, giving you clear objectives to apply in the water the very next day.

Two surf sessions every day. Personalized coaching. Nightly video analysis. Twelve days of surfing dedicated entirely to your progression.

How to Arrive

This trip begins in Lombok on April 14 and continues in Nias from April 20-27. Depending on where you’re traveling from, there are two easy ways to join the group.

Option 1 – You’re Already in Indonesia

On April 6 we meet in Lombok for 6 days. You can get from Bali to Lombok by plane or by boat. On April 20, we’ll fly together from Lombok to Gunungsitoli (GNS), the airport serving Nias. We’ll coordinate the booking of these domestic flights as a group through the Lion Air website, making the process simple for everyone.

At the end of the trip in Nias, you can either return to Bali, continue to Singapore, or connect with your international flight home, depending on your travel plans.

Option 2 – You’re Flying Specifically for the Trip

If you’re traveling specifically for this surf trip, we recommend booking an international flight that arrives early in the morning in either:

• Singapore (SIN) • Denpasar, Bali (DPS)

KLM and Lufthansa generally offer some of the most convenient flight options, depending on your departure city.

This will give you enough time to catch a connecting domestic flight to Lombok (LOP) on the same day and join the group. On April 20, we’ll fly together from Lombok to Gunungsitoli (GNS), the airport serving Nias. We’ll coordinate the booking of these domestic flights as a group through the Lion Air website, making the process simple for everyone.

Important Notes

Visa

Most nationalities can enter Indonesia with a Visa on Arrival (VOA), which costs around USD 35 and is valid for 30 days (with the possibility to extend once).

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

⚠️ Be careful when applying online—there are many unofficial websites charging significantly more than the official government fee. Click here to apply on the official website.

Flights & Domestic Connections

This trip begins in Lombok and continues in Nias, with a domestic flight between the islands on April 20. We’ll assist everyone with booking this domestic flight through the Lion Air website and coordinate the group’s itinerary to make the transfer as smooth as possible. If you plan to arrive in Indonesia before the trip or stay afterwards, any additional accommodation, transfers, or domestic flights are not included.

Baggage & Surfboards

Bringing your own surfboard(s) is highly recommended, but remember to check your airline’s board bag policies before booking.

Our recommended setup is simple: carry-on luggage, one backpack or daypack, one surfboard bag (around 23 kg)

Indonesia is warm year-round, laundry is inexpensive, and you’ll spend most of your time in boardshorts or swimwear—so packing light is highly recommended.

Surf Conditions

We’ll be surfing a variety of reef breaks throughout Lombok and Nias.

At some locations, entry and exit are over soft coral and smooth reef. Most surfers are comfortable surfing barefoot, but if you have sensitive feet, bringing a pair of thin reef booties is recommended.

Our local guides will always explain the safest entry channels and timing before entering the water.

Physical Preparation Bonus

The more prepared you are before arriving, the more you’ll enjoy the trip.

Surfing several days in a row is physically demanding, so we recommend building a basic fitness routine before departure, focusing on mobility, paddling endurance, shoulder strength, and balance.

As part of your booking, you’ll also receive access to the Surfnorip platform, featuring surf-specific workouts designed to help you prepare for the trip with short, equipment-free sessions.

What to Pack

Surf essentials: surfboard (optional), spare fins, fin key & screws, 2 leashes, leash strings, tropical surf wax, small UV ding repair kit, long-sleeve rashguard, reef-safe sunscreen, zinc, surf hat (optional), dry bag, reusable water bottle, small first-aid kit, electrolyte tablets.

Clothing: light tropical clothing, 2–3 swimsuits or boardshorts, flip-flops or sandals, comfortable sneakers, light rain jacket, breathable long sleeves for evenings.

Documents & essentials: passport, travel insurance, credit/debit cards, some Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), phone charger, power bank, universal travel adapter (Indonesia uses Type C & F plugs).

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Please make sure your policy covers surf activities, medical assistance, trip interruption or cancellation, and lost or delayed baggage.

Good to Know

Laundry services are inexpensive and widely available throughout the trip. ATMs are easy to find in Lombok and Gunungsitoli, but we recommend carrying some cash for small local businesses. Indonesia uses 220V electricity with Type C & F plugs. Mobile data is affordable, and we recommend purchasing an Indonesian eSIM or local SIM card upon arrival.
