About this Trip

A trip that goes beyond Rio.

This experience combines structured surf progression in Rio de Janeiro with a short escape to Ilha Grande, one of Brazil’s most untouched tropical islands.

You start with the energy of the city, move into consistent surf training in Recreio, and finish with a slower rhythm surrounded by nature, clear water, and quiet beaches.

It is designed for people who want to improve their surfing, explore Rio properly, and still have a few days to fully disconnect.

Why people love this trip

  • You get both sides of Brazil. City energy and island nature
  • The Ilha Grande part feels like a reset in the middle of the trip
  • The balance between surf, movement, and exploration feels natural
  • It never feels rushed, even with a full itinerary
  • Small group, personal attention, no crowd feeling
  • You leave with progress in your surfing and a deeper travel experience

Itinerary

Day 1

You arrive in Rio and step straight into the city’s rhythm. A bike ride along Copacabana sets the tone, followed by Sugarloaf Mountain at sunset. First views, first impressions, and that feeling of being exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Day 2

A deeper look into Rio. You explore the historic city center, then head up to Christ the Redeemer for one of the most iconic views in the world. The day ends with another sunset, this time with a better understanding of the city.

Day 3

You move into the surf side of the trip. First session in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, getting comfortable in the water and adjusting to the conditions. Beach time, slower pace, and settling into the routine.

Day 4

Surf training continues, now with more intention. You start refining technique, followed by a favela tour that gives you a real perspective on Rio beyond what most travelers see.

Day 5

Filming day. You surf while being recorded by drone, capturing your movements in detail. Later, you break it all down in a video analysis session, understanding exactly what to improve.

Day 6

Another surf session, building on what you’ve learned. In the afternoon, you hike Pedra do Telégrafo. A different kind of challenge, with one of the most unique viewpoints in Rio.

Day 7

Back in the water for another filmed session. More repetition, more confidence, and a second round of video analysis to track your progress.

Day 8

Surf in the morning, then a hike to Pedra Bonita. Shorter, but just as rewarding, with views over the ocean, the city, and the mountains.

Day 9

You leave the city behind and head to Ilha Grande. The pace shifts immediately. No traffic, no noise, just nature, ocean, and space to slow down.

Day 10

A full day on the island. Swim, explore, rest, or just do nothing. This part of the trip is about recovery and enjoying a different side of Brazil.

Day 11

Return to the mainland and back to Recreio. A familiar place now, but with a different perspective after the island.

Day 12

Last day. Time to wrap up, take it in, and say goodbye to Rio.

Accommodation Details

The beach suites sit right across from Macumba and Pontal beaches, in Rio’s Recreio neighborhood. Bright rooms for 2–3 guests come with AC, fast Wi-Fi, and, in some, ocean views. On the ground floor there’s a small coworking nook and a terrace that turns into a sunset hangout on weekends. This is also our daily meeting point for surf lessons, so you’re on the sand in two minutes.

The shared kitchen is fully equipped, and for breakfast you’ve got a café in the courtyard plus two more options just steps away (note: many spots are closed on Mondays). Supermarkets are 10-15 minutes walking and malls are 5–15 minutes by Uber. Need extra towels/linen? Tell us and we’ll sort it.

Accommodation in Ilha Grande will be in Vila do Abraão, the main village on the island. You will stay in a traditional Brazilian pousada, simple, comfortable, and well-located, just a short walk from the beach, restaurants, and main access points.

Important Notes

September and October in Rio mark the transition into warmer months. Expect mostly sunny days, comfortable temperatures, and lower humidity compared to peak summer. It can still be a bit cooler in the mornings and evenings, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. Light clothing, sun protection, and a hat are still essential.

The water temperature is usually around 21 to 23°C. Most days are comfortable without a wetsuit, but depending on conditions and personal preference, a light wetsuit can make sessions more enjoyable. We recommend a short or full suit around 1.5mm to 2mm if you prefer extra warmth. Need help choosing one? Just reach out.

Every day in Rio is different. The itinerary stays flexible and may be adjusted depending on local events and surf conditions, so you always get the best possible experience.

Rio always has something to offer. If the waves are not ideal for surfing, we use the time to explore other sides of the city through scenic hikes or cultural experiences.

European travelers with a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry can enter Brazil visa-free for an initial period of up to 90 days. This can be extended for an additional 90 days by applying through the Brazilian Federal Police.

Minors must meet the following conditions to travel: they must be accompanied by at least one adult and carry a notarized authorization from both parents, or from the non-traveling parent.

If you feel like staying longer in Rio, we are happy to help you extend your stay, depending on room availability and additional costs. Please note that any extra nights outside the trip dates, including arriving earlier or leaving later, are not included and will be at your own expense.

Surf lessons are organized based on your level, so you can progress at your own pace and enjoy every session. Intermediate and advanced surfers usually start early around 6:00 AM to catch the best conditions, while beginners have dedicated sessions around 8:00 AM.

Currently, no vaccines are required to enter Brazil. However, we recommend checking the latest information before traveling through official health sources. Vaccines commonly recommended by global health organizations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Yellow Fever, and Typhoid.

Arriving early / extra night: You’re welcome to arrive a day earlier. Extra night billed separately and subject to availability.

We know safety is important. Upon arrival, we organize an introduction session about Rio de Janeiro, including its history and social context. We will go over potential risks and how to avoid them, along with simple precautions to help you feel comfortable and relaxed during your stay. Common things to be mindful of include phone theft, walking in poorly lit areas at night, and wearing visible valuables.

The local currency in Brazil is the Real, also written as BRL or R$. You can withdraw money from ATMs, which usually charge a fixed fee but offer a good exchange rate. Cards like Revolut or Wise work well and automatically convert currency at competitive rates. An ATM withdrawal typically costs around 20 BRL. The maximum withdrawal per transaction is usually around 1000 BRL.
